NYS Inspection Quick Reference Guide for Window Tint

Passenger Car 1992 or newer with dual outside rear view mirrors

All windows except rear window must read 70% or higher on VLT171 tint meter

 

Passenger Car 1992 or newer without outside dual rear view mirrors

All windows must read 70% or higher on VLT171 tint meter

 

Non Passenger Car 1992 or newer with dual outside rear view mirrors

Front and front side windows must read 70% or higher on VLT171 tint meter

 

Non Passenger Car 1992 or newer without dual outside rear view mirrors

Front, front side, and rear windows (not rear side) must read 70% or higher on VLT171 tint meter

 

 

All vehicles 1991 or older with dual outside rear view mirrors

Front and front side windows must read 35% or higher on VLT171 tint meter

 

All vehicles 1991 or older without outside dual rear view mirrors

Front, front side, and rear (not rear side) window must read 35% or higher on VLT171 window tint meter

 

Notes:

Front window testing is below the top 6”.

Passenger vehicle means that the door jamb sticker says “Pass” as vehicle type.
